Handrails for Steps
Amboori Grama Panchayat
Thiruvananthapuram District

Concreted stairway near nadakkal thazhe road in Amboori Grama Panchayat provides a short cut to reach the main road to the people in that locality. Over 150 people including elderly and school children need to navigate those unrailed (without handrails) 40 steps to reach the bus stop in the main road earlier. People feared of safety and fall while climbing and descending the stairway.
So, due to the continuous demand of people in Grama Sabha, the Panchayat formulated and implemented the project ‘Construction of Handrail in Amboori Nadakkal Thazhe Road’ in 2013-14 using the Performance Grant of Rs.100000. They installed iron railing handrails as it is durable, reliable and harmonize well with exterior surroundings. It is of 217 m length and covered the entire stairway.
In addition to safety and prevent falls, there are many other benefits of installing handrails to steps. It increases mobility, takes pressure of the joints of our body, improves stability and provides slip protection. Now the people are using the stairway with satisfaction and without the fear of fall.
