Bathing Ghat at Sabarimuttam
Chenkal Grama Panchayat
Thiruvananthapuram District

The Neyyar is a river of south-western India in the Western Ghats. It flows from the Agastya Mala hills in Thiruvananthapuram District. The river passes through Neyyattinkara taluk into the Lakshadweep Sea near Poovar. It has a total length of 56 km. Neyyar is the main source of water for the people in Neyyattinkara taluk.

Sabarimuttam is a small village in Chenkal Grama Panchayat, which is located on the banks of Neyyar. People in the area depend on the river for bathing. Earlier the bathing ghat was a muddy slope area. People faced lots of difficulties to use it.

Mrs.Laila remembered those days; "It was a terrifying experience for us, especially ladies and children, to use the muddy slope”.

People demanded a concrete ghat because they were very much anxious about their safety. Chenkal Grama Panchayat happily accepted their demand and constructed the new concreted ghat in 2016-17. It was constructed on the banks of Neyyar river with a length of 34 m. A Performance Grant of Rs.2,50,000 was used for the construction of the ghat. Around 50 families are benefited from it.

Panchayat President Mr.Vattavila Rajkumar said; “It is our responsibility to provide safety and service to the public. Now we happy to see their smiling faces

The residents’ dream came into reality only because of the hard work of Mr.Liju, the Assistant Engineer of the Panchayat and his team.

Mr.Sabu, a resident in Sabarimuttam said; “Bathing in Neyyar is a rejuvenating experience and we feel so much gratitude to the authorities of Panchayat to provide a better facility for us to experience a safe bathing”.
