Construction of Check Dam
Cherunniyoor Grama Panchayat
Thiruvananthapuram District
Check Dams built on streams/ rivers, stop rain water discharging into
the sea or going waste and provide natural fresh water bodies for local use as
well as strengthening ecosystems. Check dams also serve to trap sediments,
thereby strengthen local bio-diversity and help improve the overall quality of
the water. Check dams retains water up stream, so that the water percolates
into the ground and recharges the ground water table.
By
knowing these advantages, and also due to the constant demand of farmers in the
area, Cherunniyoor Grama Panchayat decided to construct Check Dams in their
Panchayat. So in 2012-13, they constructed a check dam at Kuttiayal Agricultural land. It was mainly
implemented for irrigation purposes.
The
beneficiaries of the project are around 300 families. Traditional farmers and
others are depending on the scheme for their agricultural productivity. Apart
from agricultural productivity, Check
Dam enhanced groundwater replenishment in the nearby areas. The
entire cost of Rs. 80848 was met from Performance Grant.
Again
in 2014-15, the Grama Panchayat took another project of Check Dam across
Velliyazhchakkavu stream with a Performance Grant of Rs.145000. About 500
people including farmers are benefited from this project.
