Government
schools serve the majority of children in our country. These schools have
witnessed a decline in their services, and increasingly they are accessed by
the poor and the marginalised. But now Government took efforts to improve these
schools, in the belief that they could demonstrate or induce an enduring change
in the system.
MN Lower Primary school in Vellayani is a Government
school which is under Kalliyoor Grama Panchayat. Before 2 years, about 150
students were there in the school. But after that the enrolment of students
increased to about 200 due to proper staffing in the school. So the school
authorities forced to plan additional class rooms to the school. They
approached the Grama Panchayat and the Panchayat responded positively.
The Grama Panchayat formulated a multiyear project in
the Financial Year 2013-14 for the development of the school. In 2013-14 they
took the project ‘construction of two class rooms and stair room at M N L P S’ using
Performance Grant of Rs. 10,00,000. In 2015-16 they took its completion work
using the Performance Grant of Rs. 8,98,728. The project aimed at improving the
education children receive through Government schools by enhancing its
facilities.
The project completed in 2015-16 due to the constant
co-operation of parents and now it is functioning well. The project is
completed by ensuring the environmental and social safeguard measures. The work
was done during school vacation and holidays to safeguard children from dust
and to avoid disturbances in taking classes. During the construction time they
used net to control air pollution.
Now children from this Panchayat and nearby wards of
other LBs are utilising the services of the school.
